How to sell carnival costumes on Kaspi: sizes in one card, the uniform ban, licensed characters and the minimum price

How to sell carnival costumes on Kaspi: sizes in one card, the uniform ban, licensed characters and the minimum price

Carnival costumes on Kaspi sell at a 12.5% rate including VAT, and no category permission is needed. The costumes themselves sit in «Одежда» (Clothing), while masks, wigs and headwear sit in «Подарки, товары для праздников» (Gifts and party goods), and that decides how you set up sizes. Two bans are worth knowing in advance: uniforms of the military, police and tax service can't be sold, and Disney, Hasbro, Barbie and Mattel are on the restricted brands list. Below is a breakdown and eight items calculated in tenge.

In short

  • Costumes for kids and adults, masks, wigs and party accessories go at 12.5% with VAT, 10.9% without VAT.
  • Costumes in "Clothing" can keep several sizes in one card; masks and wigs in "Gifts" follow that category's rules.
  • A "police officer" or "soldier" costume that looks like a real uniform risks falling under a direct Kaspi ban.
  • An Elsa or Barbie costume with the rights holder's brand requires documents; without the brand and a license it's a replica.
  • A kids' costume at 9,900 ₸ brings more from a regional order than the same costume at 10,500 ₸.

Where costumes sit and how much Kaspi takes

In the Kaspi tariffs (Tariffs 2026, PDF) the carnival range is split across two sections.

Subcategory Section Without VAT With VAT
Carnival costumes for girls Clothing → Girls 10.9% 12.5%
Carnival costumes for boys Clothing → Boys 10.9% 12.5%
Women's and men's carnival costumes Clothing → Women / Men 10.9% 12.5%
Carnival masks, wigs, headwear Gifts and party goods → Carnival costumes, party accessories 10.9% 12.5%
Carnival and party accessories, temporary tattoos Gifts and party goods → Carnival costumes, party accessories 10.9% 12.5%
National costumes Clothing → Girls / Boys / Women / Men 10.9% 12.5%

National costumes are a separate subcategory, and they shouldn't be confused with carnival ones. Someone buying a Kazakh kamzol for Nauryz doesn't look for it among pirate costumes. Christmas trees, garlands and New Year decor are covered in the article New Year goods on Kaspi.

Sizes: one card or five

Kaspi Guide says that in the "Clothing" and "Footwear" categories you can list several colors or sizes in one card (q3554, updated Feb 23, 2026). Carnival costumes sit in "Clothing", so a superhero costume in 104, 110, 116, 122 and 128 cm can be kept as one card. Reviews pile up in one place, and the buyer doesn't run across five pages.

Masks, wigs and crowns are in "Gifts". There, Kaspi doesn't mention the rule about sizes in one card. Usually it isn't needed anyway: one mask fits everyone. But if you sell a kids' and an adult wig of the same model, be ready for them to be separate cards.

One more detail. The main characteristics can't be changed once a card is more than a month old. For a costume these are gender, age group and size range. If you created a "costume for boys" and girls are the ones buying it, after a month the card can't be redone, only replaced with a new one.

How to write the size

The buyer measures a costume size against the child, not the label. "Height 116 cm, chest 60 cm" works better than "size 6". A size chart in centimeters on a separate photo cuts returns more than any "check the size in chat" requests in the description.

What's not allowed: uniforms, 18+, replicas

Kaspi's list of prohibited goods (q3904, updated Jan 16, 2026) turns out to matter a lot for the carnival niche. It states directly that selling uniforms of servicemen, law enforcement agencies and the tax service of Kazakhstan is prohibited. A kids' "police officer" costume with a cap and patches that look real falls into a gray zone. A carnival costume isn't a uniform, but in a card photo that isn't always obvious. It's safer to choose models where it's clear at once that it's play: bright colors, cartoon style, no real insignia and no government agency lettering.

The same list includes goods marked 18+ and goods with images that may be perceived as offensive. Adult "party" costumes with a revealing cut and suggestive lettering may fall under this. If you have doubts about a model, don't list it: one rejected item costs less than a conversation about blocking.

Another point is weapons and items structurally similar to them. A plastic sword in a knight costume set is a toy. But metal accessories or realistic replicas are better left out of costume sets.

Licensed characters

The restricted brands list as of Nov 7, 2026 (PDF) includes Disney, Hasbro, Barbie, Mattel and Hot Wheels. This means an official Disney princess or Barbie costume requires brand permission. The documents are described in q2618 (updated Jul 10, 2026): a letter from the rights holder, a purchase agreement, waybills and payment for the last 90 days showing the trademark, at least 10 units of the brand. More in the article brand restrictions on Kaspi.

And if an "Elsa" costume was sewn by a factory without a license? That's a replica, and Kaspi prohibits selling counterfeits and replicas. Instead of the character's name, write a description in the title: "snow queen costume, blue dress with a cape". That way you don't sell someone else's brand and still show up in search for what the item actually is.

The math: from a headband to an adult costume

This is a hypothetical example, not a client case. We made up the prices, purchase costs and packaging, and left taxes out. Rates are from q2288 (updated Jun 16, 2026), in effect since Jan 1, 2026, in the table with 16% VAT.

Kaspi calculates delivery in two stages. While an order is under 10,000 ₸, only the amount matters: a 900 ₸ headband ships for 57 ₸, a 1,500 ₸ mask for 173 ₸, a 3,500 ₸ wig for 231 ₸, a costume from 5,000 ₸ to another city for 927 ₸. After that, weight kicks in. Costumes are almost always lighter than 5 kg, so it's 1,275 ₸ within the city and 1,507 ₸ to the regions.

Item Weight Where to Price Commission 12.5% Purchase cost Packaging Delivery Left over
Headband with ears up to 1 kg another city 900 ₸ 112 ₸ 300 ₸ 40 ₸ 57 ₸ 391 ₸
Carnival mask up to 1 kg another city 1,500 ₸ 188 ₸ 500 ₸ 50 ₸ 173 ₸ 589 ₸
Carnival wig up to 1 kg another city 3,500 ₸ 438 ₸ 1,300 ₸ 80 ₸ 231 ₸ 1,451 ₸
Kids' costume, simple up to 1 kg another city 6,900 ₸ 862 ₸ 3,200 ₸ 120 ₸ 927 ₸ 1,791 ₸
Kids' costume with a cape 1 kg another city 9,900 ₸ 1,238 ₸ 4,800 ₸ 120 ₸ 927 ₸ 2,815 ₸
Kids' costume with a cape 1 kg another city 10,500 ₸ 1,312 ₸ 4,800 ₸ 120 ₸ 1,507 ₸ 2,761 ₸
Set: costume, wig, mask 1.2 kg same city 12,500 ₸ 1,562 ₸ 6,400 ₸ 150 ₸ 1,275 ₸ 3,113 ₸
Adult costume 1.5 kg another city 14,900 ₸ 1,862 ₸ 7,600 ₸ 150 ₸ 1,507 ₸ 3,781 ₸

Minimum price: (purchase cost + delivery + packaging) ÷ (1 − rate). A kids' costume at 9,900 ₸ to the regions: (4,800 + 927 + 120) ÷ 0.875 ≈ 6,682 ₸. An adult costume: (7,600 + 1,507 + 150) ÷ 0.875 ≈ 10,579 ₸.

The 10,000 ₸ threshold for kids' costumes

Take the costume with a cape. At 9,900 ₸ you keep 2,815 ₸; at 10,500 ₸, 2,761 ₸. The buyer paid six hundred tenge more, and you got 54 ₸ less: delivery jumped from 927 ₸ to 1,507 ₸. If your kids' costumes are priced somewhere between 8,000 and 12,000 ₸, check each price against this threshold separately.

There's good news too. A mom takes a pirate costume, and with it an eye patch, a hat and a plastic saber: the receipt is already over 10,000 ₸, and delivery is calculated by weight, meaning almost the same as for one costume. That's why the 12,500 ₸ set in the table leaves 3,113 ₸, more than any single row except the adult costume.

Small items live on volume

With a 900 ₸ headband, 391 ₸ stays in your pocket. As a percentage it looks nice, over 40%. In money it's modest: a hundred orders give 39,100 ₸, and that's a hundred times picking, sealing a bag and handing it to the courier. Headbands, masks and tattoos work better as add-ons to a costume.

Seasonality and leftover stock

Carnival costumes sell in waves: New Year kids' parties, school holidays, Halloween. Kaspi doesn't publish how demand is distributed by week, so look at your own sales from last season, if you have them. General approaches to seasonal goods are covered in the article sales seasonality on Kaspi.

The practical consequence is leftover stock. Nobody needs a snowman costume in January until next December. If a lot is left after the season, it's more honest to lower the price at the end of the wave than to hold the goods for a year. But even here, don't go below the minimum price based on delivery to the regions, or the sale turns into paying extra to get rid of the goods.

Returns after the party

General periods: 14 days for an item that wasn't used and kept its appearance, 30 days for a defective one (q2269, updated Sep 21, 2026). For the carnival niche this means that a costume bought five days before a kids' party can, in theory, come back a week after it. If it has juice stains and a crumpled cape, it's an item with signs of use. The seller may refuse the return, and the buyer has the right to dispute the refusal within three days (q2277).

What helps. A photo of every costume before packing. A tag that can't be put back once torn off. And a size chart in centimeters: a costume that fits by height is usually not returned with "didn't fit". How to handle disputed returns is in the article returns on Kaspi for sellers.

Common mistakes when selling carnival costumes on Kaspi

  1. A "police officer" costume with realistic patches. Kaspi prohibits law enforcement uniforms, and in a photo such a costume can't be told apart from a uniform.
  2. An "Elsa costume" from a factory without a license. It's a replica, replicas are prohibited, and the character's name in the title only makes it worse.
  3. An official Disney costume without brand documents. The card can't be created, and the batch waits in the warehouse.
  4. Each size set up as a separate card. Reviews get spread over five pages, though "Clothing" lets you keep sizes together.
  5. A kids' costume raised from 9,900 ₸ to 10,500 ₸. On every regional order you get 54 ₸ less instead of a gain.
  6. Leftovers sold off below the minimum price. Every regional order after the season brings a loss.
  7. No photo of the costume before shipping. Nothing to back you up in a dispute about stains after the party.

How to automate prices for carnival costumes

In season, the product cards (the single shared listing where all sellers of an item compete) of popular costumes get many sellers, and the price can change several times in one evening. SaleScout's Kaspi bot (a dumping bot, i.e. a repricing bot) checks prices at intervals from 20 seconds and never goes below the minimum price you set. Set it based on delivery to another city, and the bot won't hold the top spot in the card at a price where a regional order brings nothing. When a competitor raises their price or leaves the card, the bot raises yours too. You can try the bot free for 7 days, no card required.

Frequently asked questions about selling carnival costumes on Kaspi

What commission does Kaspi charge on carnival costumes?

12.5% with VAT, or 10.9% without VAT. The rate is the same for kids' and adult costumes, masks, wigs, headwear and party accessories.

Do you need permission to sell carnival costumes on Kaspi?

Not for the category. Permission is needed for restricted brands: the list includes Disney, Hasbro, Barbie, Mattel and Hot Wheels.

Can you sell a kids' police officer costume on Kaspi?

Carefully. Kaspi prohibits selling uniforms of servicemen, law enforcement agencies and the tax service of Kazakhstan, so a costume with realistic insignia may not pass moderation.

Can you keep all sizes of a costume in one card?

Yes. Carnival costumes sit in the "Clothing" category, and there Kaspi allows listing several sizes and colors in one card.

Can you sell an Elsa costume without a license?

No. A character costume without the rights holder's license is a replica, and Kaspi prohibits selling counterfeits and replicas; describe the costume without the character's name.

Can a carnival costume be returned after a kids' party?

It depends on its condition. If the costume wasn't worn and kept its appearance, it will be returned within 14 days; with signs of use the seller may refuse, and the buyer may dispute the refusal within three days.

How do you calculate the minimum price for a kids' costume?

Take the purchase cost, delivery to another city and the bag, and divide the sum by 0.875: that's the price you shouldn't go below. For the costume with a cape from the table it comes to (4,800 + 927 + 120) ÷ 0.875 ≈ 6,682 ₸.
